The land we now know as Israel and Jordan is perhaps the most historically rich place on the planet. Once the heart of some of the most ancient and powerful of civilizations, this area of the Near East is also the birthplace of the world’s three major monotheistic religions-Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Our visit to this contentious territory begins in Tel Aviv, on the scenic Mediterranean coast, to explore everything from the ancient port of Jaffa to the UNESCO-protected White City built by the first German-Jewish refugees in the 1930s. Drive to Upper Galilee, the site of an array of ruins from the Roman, Byzantine, and Medieval eras. Stay at a premier kibbutz and visit the Mount of Beatitudes, the site of the Sermon on the Mount and Capernaum, the Center of Jesus’ Ministry in Galilee. In Jerusalem, learn about the monuments holy to Christians, Muslims, and Jews alike as you absorb the city’s ageless alleyways and enduring spirituality. Wander through the tunnels of the Western Wall, walk along the Way of the Cross and the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. Cross the Israeli-Jordanian border by land to Amman, Jordan’s capital, where Bronze Age museums, winding souks, and Roman ruins make up the fabric of this bustling town. Head into the desert to Petra and rising early, wander through the striking ruins of the nomadic Nabatean people. Carved into the rocky desert cliffs is the Treasury – its fine architectural detail has been beautifully preserved. Explore Wadi Rum where huge pillars of sandstone rock rise abruptly and majestically from the sandy desert floor, En route back to Amman stay at the Dead Sea and experience the lowest point on Earth. Return home from Amman.
