Iran has one of the longest histories of human civilization of any modern-day country spanning from the ancient kingdom of Susa to its current status as a regional power. Our program begins in Tehran, a city full of world-class museums and delicate cuisine. Head north to the pilgrimage city of Mashhad and admire the ornate burial site of the 9th-century martyr, Imam Reza. In Kerman, learn about a key stop on the ancient Silk Road where traders exchanged goods creating rich cultural traditions. In the desert city of Yazd experience an old quarter of winding alleyways and a perfectly preserved desert architecture. From Shiraz discover Persepolis and marvel at the UNESCO-protected ruins of the city that were built to be the most commanding and regal of the ancient world. Drive to Isfahan, a flawless reflection of Persian culture, where everything from millennia-old mosques shrouded in meticulously painted tiles to its quaint bridges fit seamlessly into this urban masterpiece. Wind down in Kashan, a quintessentially Persian city, where water flows through perfectly created gardens. Explore the graceful bazaar and some of the town’s beautiful dwellings. Return home from Tehran.
