India: Cruising Along the Ganges
Optional Pre-trip extension to Amritsar and Dharamsala
October 20 – October 27, 2017 (Pre-trip Extension)
October 26 – November 7, 2017
The Ganges and Brahmaputra rivers form one of the largest river systems on the earth and the history of the vast estuary formed from their combined deltas is both fascinating and complex. As geological movement caused the main channels of the rivers to shift, new areas of settlement and trade were created. Ideas and architecture often underwent significant adaptations in the process. More recently political frontiers created by the British have divided a region geographically split by water channels yet culturally united. Join us on a unique journey through a lush land of rich archaeological sites, mangrove forests and decaying mansions of nineteenth-century maharajas. Begin the trip in Kolkata, the capital of present day West Bengal. Spend an afternoon visiting Dalhousie Square, St. John’s Church and Victoria Memorial. Begin sailing up the Ganges River and stop in the town of Kala to enjoy a cycle rickshaw ride through enchanting and distinctive temples. Visit villages specializing in brass and copper making. Explore the historic town of Murshidabad by tonga (a horse-drawn cart). Cruise through canals with abundant birdlife while continuing the journey up the Ganges. In Bateshwarsthan visit the site of Vikramshila University, one of two important centers of Buddhist learning during the reign of the Pala Dynasty which dates back to the 8th or 9th century BC. Visit the important pilgrimage site of Bhagirath and the Bihar School of Yoga in Munger, one of the largest cities in Bihar state. Travel to Nalanda, the oldest seat of learning in India; also visit Rajgir, where Buddha spent many years and finally arrive in Bodhgaya where Buddha obtained enlightenment. End the trip in Varanasi, the holiest town for Hindus. Fly home from Varanasi.
