From the Romans to Napoleon: A Journey through the Croatia and Bosnia & Herzegovina
September 23 – October 9, 2017
Led by Ms. Nirvana Romell
With its almost 4,000 miles of pristine Mediterranean coastline and seemingly endless historical offerings from every era, Croatia is probably Europe’s best kept secret. We begin in Zagreb, Croatia’s energetic and charmingly eccentric capital city. While there, we make sure to explore Croatia’s quaint countryside whose rolling hills are speckled with medieval castles and fortresses. From there, we drive to the stunning Istrian Peninsula where we explore the ancient Roman towns of Porec with its 4th century basilica, Rovinj, one of the last true Mediterranean fishing ports with its heavy Venetian influence, and finally Pula whose Roman amphitheater is one of the best preserved. Leave the peninsula for Split whose dazzling coastal mountains and location on the tranquil Dalmatia Coast make it no mystery as to why Roman Emperor Diocletian retired there. Spend an afternoon in Trogir, an infinitesimal Croatian island town of ancient Greek roots, where its original medieval walls continue to protect its archetypal Romanesque architecture and labyrinth of narrow, winding streets. To end, wander the intricate and imposing ancient fortifications of Dubrovnik that surround its enchanting cluster of Baroque buildings and marble streets. Return home from Dubrovnik.
